Podemos, a novel sociopolitical project

In the European context, we recently witnessed both frustrated initiatives, such as, in France, the Nouveau Parti anticapitaliste (NPA, associated with Olivier Becancenot), in Italy Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S – the Five Star Movement of Beppe Grillo), and successful political projects such as Syriza in Greece.

Podemos starts as a spinoff project led by Pablo Iglesias (35 years old in 2014), an experienced and skilled spokesman, together with a group of other professors at the Faculty of Sociology and Political Science and Sociology at Universidad Complutense in Madrid. The economic and institutional crisis represented an opportunity to promote a totally new sociopolitical alternative (see Pictures 1 and 2).
